2020 Youth Career Olympics is on!

Each year more than 250 students from Northeast Ohio high schools come together to compete in Y.O.U.’s Youth Career Olympics (YCO). The one-day event is a culmination of everything the students throughout the school year in their Jobs for Ohio’s Graduates (JOG) class. The competition allows them to demonstrate to employers their maturity, professionalism, dedication to community service, and knowledge of industries in the region.

The students who participate in the YCO in one of ten events: Employability Skills Testing; Employment Interview; Employment Application Review; Program Cover Design; Community Service; Corporate Team Challenge; Budgeting for Life; Public Speaking; Visual Display; and Decision Making.

This year, Y.O.U. provided the JOG course in 10 sites: Glenville High School, Lincoln-West Global School of Studies, John Marshall High School, John Adams High School, Euclid High School, Maple Heights High School’s Educational and Career Advancement Center (ECAC), Oberlin High School, Shaker Heights High School, and Washington Park High School.

While the COVID-19 crisis has interfered with most events globally, we’re excited to announce the YCO will continue virtually. The competitive events will launch via Y.O.U.’s website Monday, April 27 and continue throughout the week. The YCO will wrap on Friday, May 1 with an awards ceremony to announce the first, second, and third place winners. Volunteers will serve as virtual judges, and using social distancing prodicals, we have filmed the students competing in Public Speaking. Y.O.U. staff members are diligently working to iron out the final details.

This has been a huge undertaking, and we are excited to showcase the work of our students. It is the relationships we have with our students that allow us to continue this event during a pandemic crisis.
— Pam Macer, Y.O.U. Chief Program Officer

This is the first time the competition has been open to the public thanks to the internet. Stay tuned for additional information as we plan to announce each activity on our social platforms daily. We are excited to continue with our flagship event and thankful for committed staff, donors, and volunteers who have worked hard to make this happen for our students who have worked so hard.

Make sure to visit the Y.O.U. homepage on Monday, April 27 for a link to the competition.
