The newly established Cleveland Clinic Louis Stokes Internship program will offer opportunities for 100 high school freshmen, the Clinic announced Tuesday, Feb. 23, which would have been the late congressman's birthday.
The nine-week, paid internship, co-sponsored by the Clinic and PNC Bank, is an expansion of the Clinic's decade-long summer internship program. The program aims to make students job-ready and to encourage careers in non-clinical areas of health care, such as law, information technology, marketing, human resources and building operations, according to a news release.
PNC will fund the program and will provide financial literacy to the students and their families.
“I can’t think of a more gratifying way of continuing my husband’s legacy of public service and his longstanding commitment to the youth of Cleveland than the establishment of the Cleveland Clinic Internship in his name,” Stokes’ wife, Jay Stokes, said in a statement. “Lou would enthusiastically support this ambitious job training initiative for our next generation of leaders."
Participating students will be residents of Cleveland and East Cleveland. They'll return to the Clinic for continuing experiences every summer throughout high school. A bridge summer after graduation and before college will offer further training or full-time employment.
The program, which seeks to fulfill the skilled workforce readiness gaps, is a five-year pilot with PNC Bank and Youth Opportunities Unlimited, which will receive applications.
