Local Schools Celebrate Their 2024 Jobs for Ohio’s Graduates Participants

JOG

With another school year in the books, eight schools in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District recently celebrated their Jobs for Ohio’s Graduates (JOG) program participants.

Taught by Y.O.U.’s full-time Career Specialist Instructors, JOG is an in-school career development course that promotes higher high school graduation rates and skills needed for post-secondary success.

The following schools hosted JOG programs for the 2023-24 school year:

  • East Tech High School

  • Glenville High School

  • John Marshall School of Civic and Business Leadership

  • Lincoln-West School of Global Studies

  • Maple Heights High School

  • Maple Heights ECAC High School

  • Max Hayes High School

  • Warrensville High School

Throughout the year, students worked on proficiencies — including resume writing, interviewing, public speaking and other workplace readiness skills — as well as activities such as community service. Some students even showcased their talent at key events such as the Youth Career Olympics or Career Development Conferences.

During the End of Year Celebrations, graduates received their Certificate of Mastery for successfully completing the program. The students heard from their instructors and guest speakers before partaking in a prepared meal, varying from breakfast classics, tacos, wings, pizza and more.

These events provide an opportunity to reflect on the hard work over the year as well as hear advice as the students prepare for life outside of high school.

“Embrace failure as a stepping stone,” advised guest speaker and Y.O.U. alumni Carleha Jackson, encouraging Warrensville High School youth to be confident and overcome imposter syndrome.

While each event was structured slightly differently, common themes emerged from the instructors and guest speakers — be true to yourself, push yourself to be better and be open to constant change.

“Be a leader, not a follower,” said Demarko Williams, JOG Employment Specialist for Y.O.U. “Be a positive influence… trust yourself.”

Even once the students complete the program, the support continues beyond as Y.O.U. remains a resource for a full year after graduating.

Congratulations to all of our 2024 JOG participants on a successful year!
