Y.O.U. Interns meet President Biden

On his July 6 trip to Ohio, President Biden visited Max Hayes High School and announced the finalization of a rule providing nearly $90 billion for the Pension Benefit Guarantee Corporation as part of the provisions for the American Rescue Plan.

Pay our Interns invited Y.O.U. interns James, Avantika, and Kaylen (interning with Black Girl Media), Amari and Kenneth (City of Cleveland), and Mahir (University Hospitals) to attend.

Y.O.U. Intern Amari noted how amazing of an experience the day was, “to be able to see such high powered people and to be able to hear how they plan to make a change. It really opens your eyes to empowering yourself to one day be up there.”

Most of the audience was union workers, retirees, and supporters. Internship Manager Valerie Slovenec recalls how much Y.O.U. stuck out in the crowd. “They’d ask where we were from, and I’d say ‘Y.O.U.; these are the future leaders of the community’ and everyone was so excited to talk to the youth! Lots of great conversations across generations happened that day.”

The interns also met Senator Sherrod Brown, Rep. Shontel Brown (Warrensville Heights), Rep. Mary Kaptur (Toledo), Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh, Rep. Richard Neal (Massachusetts Democrat and chair of the House Ways and Means Committee), and Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb.

Mahir feels thankful for the “once in a lifetime opportunity to meet the president. It was very encouraging to hear about his plans for unions and the working class of America.”
